The connector is the part of a charge point everybody touches and almost nobody designs carefully. It gets dropped, dragged across gravel, left in the rain and pulled out at an angle by someone carrying shopping.
Ours is rated for ten thousand mating cycles, which works out at roughly one connection a day for twenty-seven years. Getting there meant moving the strain relief into the handle casting rather than bonding it to the cable, so the load path runs through aluminium instead of polymer.
The illuminated ring around the port does more than decorate. It reports four states at a glance from across a driveway: idle, negotiating, charging and fault. Drivers stop checking their phone to find out what the car is doing, which is the point.
None of this shows up in a comparison table. It shows up three winters later, when the cable still coils properly and the latch still clicks.
